Platelet-Rich-Plasma Therapy

Plasma-rich platelets (PRP)

has been used for many years to promote wound healing. The platelet-rich plasma is injected into the skin, which then secretes growth factors that stimulate collagen and regenerate skin cells. This rejuvenates the skin and gives it a pink glow.

The procedure involves

extracting a small amount of blood from the patient and then putting it in the centrifuge for four to five minutes. The platelet-rich-plasma is then injected into the skin or scalp. The patient usually needs 3 to 6 sessions. Plasma injection is safe because it is taken from the same blood as the patient. PRP is designed to rejuvenate the skin and is not intended to treat wrinkles unless it is mixed with hyaluronic acid.

With the limited availability of FDA-approved

therapies for the treatment of hair loss such as minoxidil and hair transplantation, comes the importance of plasma-rich plasma injection as a promising treatment for hair loss. Several studies have been published to prove the safety and efficacy of PRP in increasing the thickness of existing hairs and prevent hair loss after 3-4 months of starting treatment. Platelets release growth factors, which act on stem cells in the hair follicle, leading to increased blood vessels feeding hair follicles, thus increasing the hair thickness.
